FAQ

1)What is a segway? How does it work?

The Segway® Personal Transporter (PT) is the first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device. With dimensions no larger than the average adult body and the ability to emulate human balance, the Segway PT uses the same space as the average pedestrian, and can go almost everywhere a person can walk. The Segway PT allows people at home and at work to go farther, move more quickly, and increase the amount they can carry anywhere they currently walk. To see how the segway works click here:

2) Is a Segway difficult to ride?

Not at all. The Segway is designed to deliver a maximum of responsiveness with a minimum of effort. Each of our tours starts off with a comprehensive training course that will teach you the basics of Segway handling. So, while the Segways effortless glide might be a little disconcerting at first, by the time you finnish the tour you'll be a pro. Ready to buy your own and head out!

3) Are the Segways available for rent?

Unfotunately, Sanibel city ordinance does not allow Segways on public property with the exception of a guided tour. Although the Segway's safty record is very good, an eighteen month safety study is under way before the matter is brought back up to the Sanibel city council.

Therefore, renting a Segway for personal use on Sanibel is impractical.

We do provide rentals off island, for personal, corporate, and civil use.

4) How long will the batteries last? What is the maximum speed we can move at?

Our Segways are equipped with Lithiom-Ion batteries good for about 24 miles, or 2 hours of continual use on a full charge. Average charge time is roughly 6 hours, but with the built in charge management package, you can just plug it in and forget it. No memory developing, no overcharging, just a simple wall outlet is all you need.

As for speed, the Segway PT has three different pre-programmed settings. The black, or beginner mode maxes out at about 6 mph. The yellow, or intermediate mode lets you cruise at a mean 8 mph. The red, or advanced mode will let you hit the Segways top speed of 12 1/2 mph. While on tour we will split our time between black and yellow.

5) Are Segways safe to ride?

In a word, yes! The machine’s five internal gyroscopes will keep the platform level despite a rider’s best effort to flip it. The platform’s weight sensors take readings 100 times per second to ensure responsive starts and (sometimes more importantly) stops. To further guard your safety we require all of our riders to wear a helmet while on the Segway, just in case. With several other programming safety features built right in, the Segway provides one of the safest, most enjoyable ways to experience all that Sanibel Island has to offer

6) Are reservations required?

Though we do accept walk-ins during the slow season (August-November), we do ask you to call ahead during peak season (December-July). The only way we can guarantee you a time slot is if you call ahead. Tour times start daily at 9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2:00 p.m. Please call if you need to cancel or if you are running late. Reserve your tour today! 239-472-3620.

7) How long will the tours last?

Our tours will range between one-and-a-half to two hours, depending on group size and how confident riders are during training. Certainly not long enough to see everything on Sanibel, so you'll just have to come back again.

8) Where on the Island do your tours run?

Our tours range all over the island. We have a variety of routes that explore some of the most interesting facets of Island life and ecology. For more information on routes, please see the tours section of our website.

9) Are tours ever cancelled?

As Sanibel is a small, flat island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, heavy rainstorms do tend to crop up now and again. Short of these torrential downpours, not much else will stop us. If we need to cancel a tour, we will call as far in advance as possible.

10) How old do you need to be to ride? What if I have a disability?

Too little weight can cause handling problems as the gyro sensors are in the standing platform. Due to this, we require all riders to weigh at least 100 lbs. Children must be at least 14. Please make inquiries at time of reservation. Disabilities can be a problem, but as long as you can mount and dismount (a step of about five inches), and if you can stand for about an hour at a time, you should have no problem on our tours.

11) How do I find Segway of Sanibel?

We are conveniently located at 1509 Periwinkle Way, right across the street from our sister store, Billy’s Rentals. For those of you staying in Ft. Myers, just take a right onto Periwinkle and you’ll run right into us about a mile down the road. Just look for the big yellow signs.

We most certainly do. Any booking will come complete with up to ten Segways, helpful and friendly staff trainers, cones for courses, stop watches, flashing lights, the works. To add a bit of flare to your little get together, call 239-472-3620. Prices to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

13) Where can I get my very own Segway?

Segway of Sanibel is a licensed Segway dealer. We offer all models and a wide variety of accessories, allowing you to customize your new Personal Transporter. Just ask one of our knowledgeable sales reps about how you can get your very own Segway PT.
